Attendance and Illness Procedures

Attendance

Unauthorised absences are those for which we have had no explanation or where parents make the decision to withdraw their child without authorisation for leave of absence. Please ring the school or send a message as soon as possible when your child is ill or will be in late, stating the reason.

If a child arrives after the register closes at 9.10am this will be marked as an unauthorised absence. Frequent lateness will become cause for concern and will be monitored by the school with the possibility of a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued by the Pupil Entitlement Team if attendance does not improve.

Stedham Primary School does not authorise holiday in term time. In certain exceptional circumstances, leave of absence may be granted; please see our Pupil Attendance and Absence Policy for further details.

Illness

When children are genuinely unwell they should be kept at home. While we have a team of first aiders at the school, there are no qualified medical personnel and facilities for looking after sick children are very limited.

If your child has had a stomach upset or sickness, it is important that you allow a period of at least 48 hours after the sickness has finished, before sending them back to school. Such action will help to prevent the infection spreading unnecessarily to others in the school.

In all cases of your child being sick and unable to come to school, telephoning the office and leaving a message on the answer phone each and every day your child is absent will mean their absence is accounted for (the office staff will chase parents who have not phoned in confirming reasons for absence).

Please leave the following information in your message:

  • Your name and relationship to the child

  • Your child’s name

  • His/her class

  • Reason for absence
